Title: Celebration of Mothers
Text: Gen. 3:20, 4:1-2
[Gen 3:20]  And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
[Gen 4:1]  And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
[Gen 4:2]  And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Introduction

  • It is a tradition to set today apart as a day that we celebrate mothers and mothers to be.
  • Eve was called a mother even before she gave birth to Cain
  • It is not until you give birth that you are mother
  • There are many mothers with their own biological children,
  • There are also mothers without biological children, but are mothers because of their characters and deeds
  • Any woman can give birth, but it takes great character and deeds to be a mother – 1 Kings 3:22-27
    • [1Ki 3:22]  And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
    • [1Ki 3:23]  Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
    • [1Ki 3:24]  And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
    • [1Ki 3:25]  And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
    • [1Ki 3:26]  Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
    • [1Ki 3:27]  Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
  • To all our mothers and mothers in waiting – we celebrate you

Main Topic

We celebrate our mothers because of their character and deeds. There are 7 characters that our mothers possess, and that is why we celebrate them.
  • Mothers are loving
    • [1Ki 3:26]  Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
  • Mothers are caring
    • Martha – [Luk 10:40]  But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
  • Mothers make sacrifices
    • The Canaanite Woman – Matt. 15:21-28
  • Mothers protect
    • [Exo 2:3]  And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.
    • [1Ki 3:26]  Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
  • Mothers build their homes
    • [1Sa 25:18]  Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.
  • Mothers teach and corrects – Tit. 2:3-4
    • [Tit 2:3]  The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
    • [Tit 2:4]  That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
  • Mothers pray – 1 Sam 2:1-2
    • [1Sa 2:1]  And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.
    • [1Sa 2:2]  There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
    • [2Ki 4:30]  And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
