Title: Jesus: The Light of Men
Text: Gen 1:2-3, John 1:1-9
[Gen 1:1] In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
[Gen 1:2] And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
[Gen 1:3] And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
[Joh 1:1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[Joh 1:2] The same was in the beginning with God.
[Joh 1:3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
[Joh 1:4] In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
[Joh 1:5] And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
[Joh 1:6] There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
[Joh 1:7] The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all menthrough him might believe.
[Joh 1:8] He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
[Joh 1:9] That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Introduction
- Explanation of Gen 1:2-3
- Explanation of John 1:1-9
- There was darkness upon the earth – then God said…let there be light
- There was darkness upon man – then God said – I’ll send men a Light. That Light is Jesus.
- For you to understand the importance of light, you must understand darkness.
- Math 9:27-30
- [Mat 9:27] And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
- [Mat 9:28] And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
- [Mat 9:29] Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
- [Mat 9:30] And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
- Jesus is the Light –
- Without Jesus, we will remain in absolute darkness and blindness
- Without Jesus, one will be in the state of the blind leading the blind
- Without Jesus, one will be on a journey without a destination
- It is the Light that gives direction to life
- It is impossible to navigate life without the Light because the Light is the One that gives life
Main Topic
Darkness/Blindness
- The absence of light
- There is nothing good about being in the dark or being blind
- Physical blindness is darkness – Math 9:27-30
- Spiritual blindness is darkness – Rom 1:20-22, Eph 4:17-18
- [Rom 1:20] For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
- [Rom 1:21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
- [Rom 1:22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
- [Eph 4:17] This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
- [Eph 4:18] Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
- Being alienated from the life of God is darkness
- Evil deeds are done in darkness
- [Joh 3:19] And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
- [Pro 4:19] The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
- Darkness is a terrible state for humanity. It is a state that the enemy wants to keep the children of God
- God has given us a better option, if we so choose to accept Him. Jesus Christ, the Light, must be Lord in one’s life.
