Title: Jesus: The Son of God
Text: Col. 1:14-20
[Col 1:14]  In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
[Col 1:15]  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
[Col 1:16]  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
[Col 1:17]  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
[Col 1:18]  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
[Col 1:19]  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
[Col 1:20]  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Introduction
  • In this month of December, let us focus on Jesus alone. The author and finisher of our faith.
  • Don’t focus on the Christmas gift or the credit card charges incurred from shopping for Christmas
  • Focus on Jesus alone.
  • Last week, the teaching was on Jesus being the Light of men.
  • Today, we are looking at Jesus, the Son of God
From the book of Colossians that we just read, there are four key points I’d like to elaborate on.
  1. We have redemption through the blood of Jesus
  2. Jesus is the image of the invisible God
  3. Jesus is the head of the church
  4. All things were made by Jesus and for Jesus
Main Topic
1. We have redemption through the blood of Jesus
  • Man needed to be redeemed, and God provided redemption through the person of Jesus Christ by His blood
  • [Heb 9:22]  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
  • The shedding of blood was required for man to be redeemed.  Man has tried the goats, bulls, pigeons, and all sorts of exotic animals, but we keep going back into sin.
  • [Heb 10:4]  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
  • Even the blood of humans are not sufficient for the remission of sins, as our blood has been tainted with sin through the lineage of Adam
  • A new lineage, a new breed, with untainted blood has to come.
  • However, that new breed must still come through the womb of a woman. Hence the reason Jesus had to be born of a woman, but not through the seed of a man.
  • The seed of man has been corrupted.  There is not a single one of our Bible heroes that does not have a fault, because they came through the seed of a man.
  • Anyone on earth that did not come through the womb of a woman is an illegal alien.
  • If Jesus had come by any other way, it would have been impossible for Him to save man.
  • So, God had to come through the womb of a woman to redeem His people, because only His untainted blood could redeem us.
2. Jesus is the image of the invisible God – Php. 2:6-11
  • [Php 2:6]  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
  • [Php 2:7]  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
  • [Php 2:8]  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
  • [Php 2:9]  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
  • [Php 2:10]  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
  • [Php 2:11]  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ isLord, to the glory of God the Father.
  • If you have had an encounter with Jesus, you’ve had an encounter with God because Jesus is God
  • [Joh 1:18]  No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
  • [Joh 1:18 AMP]  No man has ever seen God at any time; the only unique Son, or the only begotten God, Who is in the bosom [in the intimate presence] of the Father, He has declared Him [He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known].
  • Gen 1:26, John 8:58, John 14:5-11
  • [Gen 1:26]  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
  • [Gen 1:26 AMP]  God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth.
  • [Joh 8:58]  Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
  • [Joh 14:10]  Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
3. Jesus is the head of the church
  • [Eph 1:19]  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
  • [Eph 1:20]  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
  • [Eph 1:21]  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
  • [Eph 1:22]  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
  • [Eph 1:23]  Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
  • [Eph 2:5]  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
  • [Eph 2:6]  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
  • Where the head is, the body must follow
  • The head controls what happens to the body
  • If Jesus is your head, Jesus would be in control of your whole life
4. By Jesus and for Jesus were all things created
  • All things in heaven, on earth, visible, invisible, physical, spiritual, thrones, and dominions, they were all created by Jesus and for Jesus
  • Only the Creator knows the purpose of the created.
  • Until the created submits to the Creator, the created cannot function to its full potential
  • You were created by Jesus and for Jesus
  • Your purpose for being created are fulfilled in Jesus
  • Understanding that Jesus made you for Himself ought to change how you relate with Him.
Conclusion
  1. We have redemption through the blood of Jesus
  2. Jesus is the image of the invisible God
  3. Jesus is the head of the church
  4. All things were made by Jesus and for Jesus
  • You must have this understanding of Jesus Christ, so that you can relate with Him better.
  • My Jesus is not a prophet, prophets come and go. Jesus is here to stay
  • My Jesus is a king Maker
  • My Jesus is the King of kings, Lord of lords, the creator of all things, the image of the invisible God, the Head of the church.
  • My Jesus is God.
