Title: The Blessed Man
Text: Ps. 1:1-6
[Psa 1:1] Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
[Psa 1:2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
[Psa 1:3] And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
[Psa 1:4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
[Psa 1:5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
[Psa 1:6] For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
AMPLIFIED
[Psa 1:1] BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.
[Psa 1:2] But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.(1)
[Psa 1:3] And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not fade or wither; and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].(2)
[Psa 1:4] Not so the wicked [those disobedient and living without God are not so]. But they are like the chaff [worthless, dead, without substance] which the wind drives away.
[Psa 1:5] Therefore the wicked [those disobedient and living without God] shall not stand [justified] in the judgment, nor [2]sinners in the congregation of the righteous [those who are upright and in right standing with God].
[Psa 1:6] For the Lord knows and is fully acquainted with the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly [those living outside God’s will] shall perish (end in ruin and come to nought).
Introduction
Being blessed is a good thing. There is nothing wrong with being blessed.
I pray that you will be blessed and you will be a source of blessing to others in Jesus name
There are different types of blessings and there are conditions for being blessed
I pray that the Holy Spirit will open our eyes of understanding to see what it means to be blessed.
Main Topic
Who is a blessed man/woman?
The definition of blessing according to the Word is
1) Someone who does not seek or heed to the counsel of the ungodly
[Pro 11:14] Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
There are godly counsels and ungodly counsels
Ungodly counsels lead one out of the will of God
2 Sam 13:1-33 – Jonadab counseled Amnon to rape his half sister. That led to his death.
Gen 3:1-24 – The counsel of the serpent to Eve. We are still paying for it until today.
Gen 16:1-16 – Sarah counseled Abraham to impregnate Hagar. She gave birth to Ishmael. We are still paying for it today.
Godly counsels keeps one grounded in the will of God
The Word of God is the ultimate counselor
Several years ago, I was going through some trying times, I was considering quitting the ministry. There was nobody I trusted enough to discuss this with. We were in Seattle attending a ministers meeting, on the outside I was smiling, but on the inside, I felt like quitting. I sat on the bed in my hotel room pondering what to do. All of a sudden I remembered that I had the phone number of a particular pastor in the UK, who is not a Redeemed pastor. I called him. He was busy, but he could tell something was not right in my voice. I told him what I was thinking and he gave me one Scripture. Just one Scripture. Immediately, the weight of the problem was lifted.
Surround yourself with godly people that will give you godly counsels.
2) Someone who does not stand with sinners
Not standing with sinners means not compromising our ways
There are many things in the society today that are making churches and children of God to compromise the Word of God.
The Word of God says you are blessed if you do not compromise.
3) Someone who does not sit with the scornful (mockers)
Don’t be found among mockers.
Flee from them, do not partake in their act.
4) Someone who delights (who desires) in the Word of God
5) Someone who meditates (studies and ponders) on the Word of God day and night
What does it mean to be blessed?
Blessing is a generic term for the goodness of God, the benefits provided by God, and the perks that comes with God.
Salvation is a blessing
Life is a blessing
Favor is a blessing
Good health (lack of sickness and disease) is a blessing
Wealth is a blessing
Love is a blessing
Marriage is a blessing
Children are a blessing
Joy is a blessing
Being spiritual is a blessing
Fulfilling your destiny in life is a blessing
I pray again, in the mighty name of Jesus, that may you be blessed.
Being blessed does not mean lack of challenges or battles, it means your victory is guaranteed
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob – they were blessed, yet that had challenges and fought battles
The best part is that they won the battles
Victory over battles is a blessing
What you have in the bank does not determine how blessed you are
If you view money as the only source of blessing, you are looking in the wrong place
[1Ti 6:6] But godliness with contentment is great gain.
There is a difference between being rich and being blessed. We tend to look at rich people as blessed people. It is not always so.
Luke 16:19-21 – Lazarus and the rich man, who was blessed?
One can be wealthy and be blessed, but wealth alone by itself is not enough
There are wealthy people that are depressed – no joy – they feel like committing suicide
There are wealthy people that are sick
There are wealthy people that are insane
There are wealthy people that don’t have children
There are wealthy people that are not loved
So, wealth alone is not a blessing
Money can’t buy spiritual blessings
Acts 8:18-24 – Simon the sorcerer offered money to Peter for the power of the Holy Ghost
By whose standard are you measuring your blessing?
Serving God faithfully doesn’t mean you have to be poor either.
It means you get your wealth with all the other blessings added to it.
Conclusion
Characteristics of a blessed man
He puts his trust in God
He relies on God to provide his needs
He serves God with his blessings, not himself
The blessing of God in him becomes fruits that others see
He is a blessing to those around him
