Title: The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – II
Text: Ex. 3:6
[Exo 3:6]  Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Introduction
  • The name that you call a person usually denotes the ability or skill of the person.
  • For example, when you have a toothache, you call on a dentist
  • When your computer is acting funny, you call on a computer technician
  • When you have car issues, you call on a mechanic
  • When God calls Himself the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, we need to analyze what He meant by that.
  • What is God saying about His abilities?
Main Topic
The God of Abraham
1. He is the God of purpose – Gen. 12:1-3
2. He is the God of Faith – Heb 11:8-9, Gen 15:6
3. He is the God of Promise – Gen 12:1-3
4. He is the God of Revelations – Gen. 18:17-18
5. He is the God of Intercession – Gen 18:23-33
6. He is the Mighty Man in Battle – Gen. 14:1-2
  • [Gen 14:1]  And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
  • [Gen 14:2]  That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
  • 4 Kings went to battle against 5 kings and prevailed
  • In the process, Lot and his household were captured
  • Abraham heard and with his servants he pursued after the kings and prevailed
  • He rescued Lot and his household
  • This cannot be ordinary, an old man and his servants defeating 4 king and their trained soldiers?
  • God’s hand must have been in it.
  • Rom. 8:31 – [Rom 8:31]  What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
  • Ex. 15:3 – [Exo 15:3]  The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
  • The Lord that knows how to fight a battle
  • He told David in 2 Sam. 5:24 – when you hear sound on the tree, the LORD has gone ahead of you – [2Sa 5:24]  And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.
  • The Lord shall fight for you – Ex. 14:14 – [Exo 14:14]  The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
  • The Lord who has the battle plan for your battles in hand shall fight for you in Jesus name
7. The God of Worship – Gen. 12:8, 13:4, 13:18
  • [Gen 12:8]  And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, havingBethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
  • [Gen 13:4]  Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.
  • [Gen 13:18]  Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
  • Abraham built altars to worship God
  • God loves worship
  • An altar represents a meeting place between the physical and the spiritual, in this case, between a man and his God
  • It doesn’t have to be a physical – however, physical altars helps one to reverence God, knowing that His presence is there
  • Each time you come to the altar, you must worship
  • You should have a place where you meet with God to worship Him on a regular basis
  • You do not have to wait to come to church to worship
  • Find a quiet place, peaceable, no distraction, etc. and meet with God daily
  • Paul and Silas worshiped God in the prison, the prison doors opened when God paid them a visit – Acts 16:25-26
    • [Act 16:25]  And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
    • [Act 16:26]  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
  • Jehosaphat worshiped God in a battle, God fought the battle for him – 2 Chro. 20:20-23
    • [2Ch 20:20]  And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
    • [2Ch 20:21]  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
    • [2Ch 20:22]  And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
    • [2Ch 20:23]  For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
  • As you worship, there is no prediction of what God will do, but He will do something.

8. The God of Perfection – Gen 17:1
  • [Gen 17:1]  And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, Iam the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
  • God was asking Abraham to walk the straight path of righteousness and not deviate from it
  • In other words, be holy
  • Holiness, simply put is obedience, and it is a requirement for anyone that is serious about making heaven –
    • [Heb 12:14]  Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
  • However, it is impossible to be holy without the washing of our sins with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and then put on the righteousness of Christ through the Holy Spirit
9. The Destiny Changer – Gen. 17:5, 15
  • [Gen 17:5]  Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
  • [Gen 17:15]  And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarahshall her name be.
  • The Lord changed the name of Abram to Abraham, and the name of Sarai to Sarah
  • Abram means exalted father
  • Abraham means father of multitude
  • Sarai means princess
  • Sarah means mother of nations
  • They were destined to be childless, but God changed their destinies from having none to having uncountable
  • Jabez – 1 Chro. 4:9-10 – he was destined to live a sorrowful life, but he cried to God and God changed his destiny
    • [1Ch 4:9]  And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
    • [1Ch 4:10]  And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
  • The Lord will change somebody’s destiny for good in Jesus name
10. The God of Covenants – Ex. 2:24
  • [Exo 2:24]  And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
  • The Lord made a covenant with Abraham, the covenant continued with Isaac, and then Jacob, and then the children of Israel, and then with us.
  • God does not break His covenant Num 23:19, Tit. 1:2, Heb 6:18
    • [Num 23:19]  God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
    • [Tit 1:2]  In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
    • [Heb 6:18]  That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
  • We have a new and better covenant
    • [Heb 12:24]  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
  • Every covenant God has made concerning you shall surely come to pass in the name of Jesus Christ
