Title: The Mystery of Godliness
Text: 1 Tim. 3:16

[1Ti 3:16]  And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Introduction

  • Godliness implies that
    • One has God
    • One serves God
  • The service to God dictates the action of the person
  • The action shows the godliness of the person
  • Godliness is the state of being spiritually pure.
  • In the passage we read, godliness is considered a mystery.  Mysteries are not revealed to everyone.  By the grace of God, this mystery will be revealed to us in Jesus name.

Main Topic

The Mystery
  • The mystery, according to 1 Timothy 3:16, is broken into 6 parts:
  • God was manifested in the flesh
  • God was justified in the Spirit
  • God was seen of angels
  • God was preached unto the Gentiles
  • God was believed on in the world
  • God was received up into glory
  • Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is Jesus Christ

1. God was manifested in the flesh
  • God is a Spirit – John 4:24, Gen. 1:2
    • [Joh 4:24]  God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
    • [Gen 1:2]  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
    • If God is a Spirit, and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, was it God that moved upon the face of the waters?
      • Absolutely, God is a Spirit and the Spirit of God is God.
  • God became flesh – Luke 1:35
    • [Luk 1:35]  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
    • The Son of God is God
      • Whatever you give birth to has equal characteristic and honor as you.
      • The Son of God was born, and that Son of God has equal characteristic and honor as God.
      • However, there can only be one God, not gods. As a result, the Son of God is God
  • We established that God is a Spirit, the Spirit of God is the same as God, the Son of God is God
  • So, we have God manifest in 3 forms.
    • God the Father
    • God the Son
    • God the Holy Ghost
  • There are reasons why we need all 3 manifestations of God.

2. God was justified in the Spirit
  • The justification of Jesus Christ in the Spirit paved way for our salvation – Phil. 2:9-11
    • [Php 2:9]  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
    • [Php 2:10]  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
    • [Php 2:11]  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
    • Things mean beings. The beings have knees, and their knees must bow to worship God.
  • There are two worlds – the physical world and the spiritual world
    • The physical world is the visible world on earth
    • The spiritual world is the invisible world of heaven and hell
  • Nothing happens in the physical realm until it has been settled in the spiritual realm.
  • The spiritual realm governs the physical realm.
  • However, we must influence and settle things in the spiritual realm first before they manifest in the physical realm.
  • How? By prayer. Jam. 5:16
    • [Jas 5:16]  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
  • We pray to God the Father, in the name of God the Son, with the help of God the Holy Spirit, using God the Word
  • We pray to God the Father, in the name of God the Son, with the help of God the Holy Spirit, using God the Word
  • We pray to God the Father, in the name of God the Son, with the help of God the Holy Spirit, using God the Word
  • Why?
    • The name of Jesus has authority here on earth and in the spirit realm – Matt. 28:18
      • [Mat 28:18]  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
    • The Word of God is the only Word that can penetrate the spirit realm from the physical world – Heb. 4:12
      • [Heb 4:12]  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
      • [Joh 1:1]  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    • The Spirit of God helps us to pray – Rom. 8:26
      • [Rom 8:26]  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

3. God was seen of angels
  • [Mat 4:11]  Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
  • [Act 1:9]  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
  • [Act 1:10]  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
  • [Act 1:11]  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

4. God was preached unto the Gentiles
  • [Rom 15:16]  That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

5. God was believed on in the world
  • We thank God for the billions of believers in the world, but there is room for more.

6. God was received up into glory – Acts. 1:11
  • [Act 1:11]  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

7. God will return the same way He left – Acts 1:11
  • [Act 1:11]  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
