Title: The Old Man Must Die – II
Text: Rom. 6:1-7
[Rom 6:1] What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
[Rom 6:2] Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
[Rom 6:3] Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
[Rom 6:4] Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
[Rom 6:5] For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
[Rom 6:6] knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
[Rom 6:7] For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Introduction
-
Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
-
Yes, we are in the dispensation of grace. The dispensation of patience. Instant judgment has passed. However, that does not give us the right to continue in sin.
-
We are already dead to sin. How can we continue to live in sin?
-
As long as you have being baptized into Jesus Christ, you have been baptized into His death
-
Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, and we were raised from the dead just like Christ was raised from the dead.
-
We are to walk in that newness of life
-
As a result, our old man was crucified with Christ
-
Such that the body of sin might be done away with
-
We should no longer be slaves to sin, because the death we died brought freedom from sin
-
So, why do we still struggle with sin?
-
[Rom 6:6] knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
-
The answer: The old man is not dead, he is still alive
-
Therefore, the old man must die.
Main Topic
The Problem
-
The #1 problem in our Christian walk is not the devil.
-
The #1 problem in Christianity is the old man, aka, Mr. Flesh, aka, carnal man.
The Old Man is not born again (2 Cor. 5:17, Rom. 10:9-10, John 3:3-6)
-
[Joh 3:3] Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
-
[Joh 3:4] Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
-
[Joh 3:5] Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
-
[Joh 3:6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
The Old Man will always fight the Spirit Man (Gal. 5:16-17, Rom. 8:5-8)
-
[Rom 8:6] For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
-
[Rom 8:7] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
-
[Rom 8:8] So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
-
What you feed the most, grows the most
Case Studies
Judas Iscariot
-
For over 3 years, Judas walked with Jesus as one of His disciples.
-
However, carnality did not allow Jesus to enter into Judas
-
[Joh 12:4] But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,
-
[Joh 12:5] “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”
-
[Joh 12:6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
-
The fact that he was a thief opened the door wide open for the devil to enter and finish his life
-
[Joh 13:2] And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
-
[Luk 22:3] Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.
-
In the end Judas committed suicide. His carnal mind ended his life.
-
[Mat 27:3] Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
-
[Mat 27:4] saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
-
[Mat 27:5] Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
Demas
-
We do not know much about Demas, but he walked with Paul.
-
Paul mentioned him twice in his letters to the Colossians and Philemon.
-
By the time we got to 2 Timothy, Demas had back-slidden. Why? Because he loved the present world (carnality).
-
[Col 4:14] Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.
-
[Phm 1:23] Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you,
-
[Phm 1:24] as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers.
-
[Phm 1:25] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
-
[2Ti 4:9] Be diligent to come to me quickly;
-
[2Ti 4:10] for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia.
The Solution
How to kill the old man
1. Stop feeding the flesh (Rom 8:13, 1 Cor. 15:31)
-
[Rom 8:13] For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
-
[1Co 15:31] I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
-
There must be a determination and willingness to kill the flesh
-
Gradually reduce the pleasures of the flesh
-
[Mat 5:29] If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
-
[Mat 5:30] And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
-
You are a spirit being having a bodily experience
-
[1Th 5:23] Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
-
You are not a body having a spiritual experience
-
Your spirit is the most important part of you, not your body, as your spirit will live forever.
-
Therefore, spiritual matters must be of utmost importance
-
There are relationships you may have to distance yourself from
-
There are relationships you may have to pursue
-
There are habits you must stop – anything that gratify the flesh must be cubbed
2. Do more spiritual exercises (feed the spirit man)
– Study the Word (Josh 1:8, 2 Tim. 2:15, 1 Pet 2:2)
-
[Jos 1:8] This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
-
[2Ti 2:15] Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
-
[1Pe 2:2] as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
-
Read the Word
-
Listen to the Word
-
Meditate on the Word
-
Obey the Word
-
Your spirit depends on the Word, because the Word is God
– Pray (1 Th. 5:17, Phil 4:6, Luke 18:1)
-
[1Th 5:17] pray without ceasing,
-
[Luk 18:1] Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,
-
[Php 4:6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
-
Pray in the morning, pray in the afternoon, pray in the evening
-
Pray everywhere and anywhere
-
Pray all kinds of prayers
-
Pray in tongues regularly
-
The depth of your relationship with the Holy Spirit is determined by how much you pray in tongues
-
7 reasons you should pray in tongues
-
Reason Number One – It’s the initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:4, 10:44-46)
-
Reason Number Two – It edifies you and your spirit prays (1 Cor. 14:4-5)
-
Reason Number Three – It makes you aware of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13)
-
Reason Number Four – It helps you to pray selfless prayers (Rom 8:26)
-
Reason Number Five – It helps to build your faith (Jude 20)
-
Reason Number Six – It helps you to pray for the unknown (Rom 8:26)
-
Reason Number Seven – It helps to yield our members to the Holy Spirit (Rom 12:1, Jam 3:8)
– Gather with other believers (Heb 10:24-25)
-
[Heb 10:24] And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
-
[Heb 10:25] not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
-
The Christian walk is not meant to be lonely
-
A loner Christian is a wandering sheep that is no longer with the flock
-
A loner Christian will become a prey to the wolves, bears, and lions
